This course examines the basic methods data analysis and statistics that political scientists use in quantitative research that attempts to make causal inferences about how the political world works. The same methods apply to other kinds of problems about cause and effect relationships more generally. probability theory. Much of the basic mathematics that social scientists use in statistical analyses and in formal modeling comes from the calculus, especially limits, derivatives, and integrals. Probability provides a theory of uncertainty, and is thus the essential tool of File Size: 56KB. The first book on statistics that I read was Statistics, by David Freedman and colleagues. What I liked most about it was its focus on explaining the fundamental concepts of statistical analysis (what do p-values actually mean, why is it important to visualize data, what does it mean for a test to be significant, etc) with concise and accurate. Statistics is an integral part of political science research. We live in a world where there is no shortage of numerical data and there is increasing demand for people who know how to make sense of it independent of the field of work. The goal of this course is to turn you into one of these people. Listopia > Political Science Book Lists. Political scientists deal with the economic, legal, health and political impacts of disease, for example. At the simplest level, they need data in order to make policy decisions that will affect many humans. Vital statistics are needed to determine the location, volume, spread and virulence of a disease.   He is a co-author of "Data Mining for Business Analytics" (Wiley), and "Practical Statistics for Data Scientists: 50 Essential Concepts" (O'Reilly,), the author of "Introductory Statistics and.
